Veteran’s Melbourne Cup 2023

It was a beautiful day to play golf today and we got a good field of 34, which included a few women and younger members of the club since our Melbourne Cup event is an open event to all members.

We also fitted in the final of the Ray Atcheson Shield, which started back in June with 29 players. This is a much sort after trophy and the last few rounds were very tight. Ian Colmer was the eventual winner, defeating David Benson 2 up with 1 to play. Our thanks go to the Atcheson family who continue to sponsor this event.

The main event was sponsored by Jim Watson and MRRefund which allowed us to have a novelty on every hole as well as give out first prize($50), second ($30) and third ($20). This is our largest day in terms of sponsorship and we are very appreciative of the support we are given.

Greg Cura won the day with 22 points from Ross Frazer on 21 and Merv McKillop came in third with 20 points on a count back from Cliff and Ian. The novelties were won by Terry Halsall, Ian Riding (Pink Lake), Bob Mofflin, Mike O’Connor, Merv McKillop (2), Kenny Wapshaw, Cliff Spencer and Peter Nicholls. This was a really good spread, which is the aim of our novelties.

Dave Benson won the OBE with 17 points and Gerard won the chocolate with 12 points. Rob Hearn won the wheel.

After the game everyone had a choice of a hamburger or chicken kebabs, along with salads and chips. We ran five $2 sweeps and three $5 sweeps for the Melbourne Cup and had nearly 50 people in the clubhouse for the running of the race.

All up everything ran smoothly and everyone seemed to have a good day. We look forward to running this event next year and appreciate the continued support of our sponsors.

Special thanks go to Rosie, Lorna and Anne who helped in preparation and cleaning up. Alan for cooking the food and our Captains, Merv and Bruce, for running everything so smoothly.
