The new club will operate under the name of the Margaret River Caves Golf Club. A report from the president showed that the fairways on the new licks had been rolled, cleared and ploughed. Seed had been planted and the recent rains had germinated the seed. It was decided that sawdust be immediately carted from the East Witchcliffe mill, and the greens be made of sawdust mixed with oil. It was agreed that a club house be built as soon as possible.

Opening day was fixed for Sunday, June 6, to be preceded by a dance in the Margaret River Hall on Saturday, June 5. Members fees were fixed at £1/1/-, and 5/- for associates. All members joining before opening day would be accepted as foundation members. After that day, a nomination fee of 10/6 and 5/- respectively would be charged.

Thanks were tendered to Col. E. A. Le Souef for the granting of the land for the links, near Kalgardup Creek.

Western Mail (Perth WA : 1885-1954), Thursday 17 June 1937, page 23

National Library of Australia (http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article37826192)

GOLF in the COUNTRY

Margaret River Caves Golf Course

SETTLERS in the Witchcliffe district are to be congratulated on their enterprise in constructing a 9-hole golf course close to the sea and some six miles from the township. The course, which will be managed by the Margaret River Caves Golf Club, was officially opened by Colonel Le Soeuf on Sunday, June 6. Before declaring the links open Colonel Le Soeuf complimented the committee and officials of the club on the amount of work that had been done. “A few months ago,” he said, “I was approached about the formation of a golf course in this locality. Knowing the vast amount of scrub and timber it would be necessary to clear, I was rather sceptical as to whether such an idea was feasible.

Prepared in Five Months.

Now, it would be hard to imagine that only five months had passed since that time. The position and resultant view along the coast line will, no doubt, make these new links not only one of the most picturesque, but also one of the most popular in the country.” Sixteen members and 14 associates took part in a 9-hole stroke competition following the official opening. The trophy1, a silver mug, presented by Dr. Le Soeuf, was won by Mr. Coate, of Margaret River, whilst the associates’ trophy was won by Mrs. M. Ewing, of East Witchcliffe.

The Course.

The Margaret River Caves golf course is situated about six miles from the township of Witchcliffe. The route to the course is by the coast road through the town. The road crosses the caves road about four miles from the town and continues on through the Red Gate for a further two miles to the course. The course has been constructed around a high land mark named Sandy Knoll, from which there are beautiful views of the coastline. The club house is located at the foot of Sandy Knoll and the first tee at the summit, whilst the fourth and sixth tees are also located on this land mark. The bogey is very easy at present. The first hole of 353 yards being a bogey five and the second hole of 190 yards being a bogey four, but no doubt as fairways and greens improve the bogey will be considerably tightened.

The First Tee.

From the top of the Knoll we drive down the first fairway, which does not offer any serious difficulties. The second hole on the seaward side of the first is a blind one-shotter of 190 yards, played over a sandy ridge and along a fairway flanked on both sides by treacherous scrub. At the third we must play across a gully to the green which has been made on the side of Sandy Knoll, and from the third green we make our way once more uphill to where the fourth tee has been placed. We play the fourth hole along a 280-yard fairway and make a return journey along the fifth fairway, which runs parallel to the fourth and the green of which Is at the foot of Sandy Knoll. Uphill again for more great views from the sixth tee and an easy journey along a 260-yard bogey four fairway.

Calgardup Creek.

Number seven is another blind hole. It is a 132-yard hole played along the slopes of Calgardup Creek. The eighth hole continues along the banks of the creek, and is packed with trouble for unwary players, and at the ninth we turn once more towards Sandy Knoll and play along a 198-yard fairway to the club- house. A splendid surfing beach is within 10 minutes’ walk of the clubhouse, and should add to the attractions of the golf course during the summer.

South-Western News (Busselton, WA: 1903-1954), Friday 8 April 1938, Page 4

National Library of Australia (http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article147653377)

MARGARET RIVER NOTES.

(From Our Correspondent).

The Margaret River Caves Golf Club ball was held in the Margaret Hall on Saturday last and proved one of the best functions of its kind yet conducted in the hall. At 8 p.m. over one hundred people were in the hall (an unusual occurrence) and by 9.30 nearly four hundred people were present enjoying the dancing, although the floor was somewhat crowded.

The music was provided by the “Arcadians.” whose versatile playing earned them much applause. Mr. Dave Howard, saxophonist and comedian, appeared on the stage several times and was well received for his rendering of saxophone solos, songs and interludes. During the dancing Dave Howard assisted the band with his saxophone and played while the band were at supper.

There were visitors from Bunbury, Busselton. Capel, Augusta, Karridale and Perth. Mr. J. Smith acted as M.C. and very ably carried on through the evening. Many novelties were introduced, including caps, streamers, lucky spot dances and others. The supper room was a very busy place, gay, artistical, decorated with dahlias, zinnias and Michaelmas daisies. Owing to the large crowd many sittings had to be arranged to cater for all. The dancers were in very gay mood and continued until 2 a.m.

The ball was a credit to the organisers, everything going off in first class style. The management of the golf club expressed satisfaction with the result.

Margaret River News (Busselton, WA: 1939 – 1941), Thursday 4 May 1939, page 4

National Library of Australia (http://nla.gov.au/nla.news-article259132352)

GOLF.

MARGARET RIVER CLUB

‘The annual general meeting of the Margaret River Caves Golf Club was held in the Mill Hall, East Witchcliffe. on Wednesday.
